Workshop Description

My workshops are geared for 2-4 days. I usually title them “Barnyard Brushstrokes”.
They are for students who wish to paint animals and portraits in a more expressive, colorful and lively manner. The animals can be anything, from barnyard, wildlife to cats and dogs. The first day always starts with a welcome and a quick hello to get to know everybody

After the intro I paint a short demo. This is to show the students how I start a painting and what my brushstroke looks like Following the demo (usually 45 minutes) I like to do some sketching from life. I like to see the students ability with drawing and their line. I like to free up their hand and get them to draw in big, loose and bold shapes. The drawing from life can include taxidermy, sculpture, or a live animal like my chocolate lab who is very quiet and easy to work from. I like students to work on large newsprint for that. After drawing I like to do color and value studies using photographs. These are always helpful and fun. Some of these are timed and some are not. I like the students to work on smaller canvas pads for these exercises.

The first afternoon and remaining days are all oil painting. On the first day I choose the subject matter from my photo library and have all the students paint the same thing. At this point I am looking for how they approach their subject matter, and what their ability levels are.

The second and third days I want the students to then pick their own image that they have brought or from my photo library and work up a finished painting. After that is completed they are free to use their own photographs to complete 2-3 more paintings. Ultimately I want them to produce a finished product that they are happy with, as well as myself. It doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, but can be something they are proud of, wish to give as a gift, or even submit to a show. Finally, I like to wind things up with an hour-long critique session, where I encourage everybody to talk about their experience and to even photograph each other’s work. This is very helpful.
