Explore a myriad of ways to use this fascinating molten beeswax paint. Create different textures and transparencies while learning the basics and then loosen up to find your authentic voice.
A Thorough Introduction to Encaustic Painting
Rae will help you find your voice and your own creative process through various techniques.
On day one, you’ll learn the basics: history, safety, proper working temperatures, substrates, making medium, mixing paint, applying and fusing paint, creating textures and smoothness. There will be several presentations with demonstrations, followed by plenty of hands-on work time. Develop a solid understanding of the medium, proper application techniques, and a few completed sample boards.
On the second day, we’ll get into mark making and mixed media, including metal leaf, oil pastel, ink, and oil pigment sticks. Bring your ideas as this workshop is about finding your voice with these techniques.
Raé Miller is an American abstract artist who recently returned to Tucson, AZ, after 18 months in Santa Fe and Taos, and eleven years as an expat in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Her teaching studio in San Miguel is well known, and her artwork is widely collected. Raé’s paintings and monotypes have been shown internationally in galleries and public installations.
Raé’s fascination with memory, light, and location has been a recurring theme in her work. While she does not limit herself to the use of a particular medium, she finds working with encaustic most satisfying for its immediacy and qualities of translucence and texture.

We had an amazing learning experience (and lots of fun) with Rae Miller when we took our first encaustic class with her in Mexico. Rae has a beautiful way of guiding her students; she teaches the techniques in a clear and concise way and encourages the student’s own creative process. I wish we lived closer so we could continue studying with her!
I searched the internet for art classes in San Miguel de Allende and wrote to two different artists re: classes. The great thing about Rae Miller is she actually personally wrote back to invite me to her class and it felt genuine. I sent it to my friend and we both signed up, sent in our deposit and anticipated our two days of learning.
Boy did we learn! We thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of heating our boards so the wax would be accepted easier, making a medium with resin and beeswax, painting with the wax, composition and all other techniques too many to list….It was very much well worth the time, money and effort. Rae is a highly skilled teacher and artist herself. Her studio in Fabrica Aurora is nicely organized and now she has moved into a new space, I’m sure it is amazing!
