In this upbeat, three-day workshop the cold wax medium, substrates, and tools will be provided. Bring your favorite mark making tools and favorite professional quality oil paints.
Suitable to beginners although some knowledge of working with oil paint will be very helpful.
We’ll work on various sizes of Arches oil paper for maximum flexibility. Instructor will demo mounting oil paper on wood cradled board for exhibit.

Leslie Miller Director and Instructor Tubac School of Fine Art LLC

About Leslie

I am an oil painter, living in southern Arizona. Tubac to be exact, a wonderful little artists community. I began pursuing art as a vocation in 2014.I had an amazing mentor for three years. When Lou Maestas passed away last spring, I felt a great loss, but he left me with something to make me grow leaps and bounds. Becoming the director of a small but mighty art school here in Tubac, I am surrounded by incredible artists and a community with a passion for creativity. I feel so very very blessed.

Most days you’ll find me at Tubac School of Fine Art, covered in paint. Most often encouraging others to nurture their artistic dreams and to experience the joy I feel whenever I am creating.

Just wanted to let Leslie know that I truly enjoyed her 2 day compressed presentation of working with oils and cold wax medium.  She was well organized and enthusiastic and more than met expectations in her presentations.  Please pass this accolade on to her.  She is a talented and dedicated artist and a treasure for Tubac School of the Arts.

My first Oil Rub Out class with Leslie Miller changed completely my whole approach to painting.  Prior to the class I had worked for years with clay but had always known I wanted to paint, and to paint with oil.  Leslie taught me to understand the basic fundamentals of oil painting – how to establish value, shape, perspective and composition.  The class was like an “aha” moment – it all came together and has been the base for my continued journey in oil painting.  Leslie’s enthusiasm, knowledge, skill, and encouragement are truly inspirational.   But most of all, she is a lovely, giving person who is a joy to work with.

Let me start by saying I am not an artist. In 2010 I joined a painting class at my wife Nancy’s urging and completed a painting after many hours of work and it turned out pretty well. In 2018 I decided to join your rub out class because Nancy and I have always admired your paintings. You gave me an appreciation of painting that I did not get in my previous endeavor. You were able to give me an understanding of the color families, and how the smallest details made the painting come alive. By turning the painting upside down and spotting details that were not apparent. The grid, that is used in the rub outs allows, gave me a lot better feel for the small details that make up a good painting. I am a big fan of the rub out style as it gave a novice like me to get an education and a far better appreciation of the subtleties that make up  a painting. And even better, it gave me two damn good paintings of my dogs that have brought many compliments. Hopefully you will be able to enroll others in your classes so they can get the same wonderful experience I had.
