Principles of Abstraction

Full Day 6 hours 9-4
May 22-25, 2022
$660/4-day Workshop

Taught by artist and author of Fishing for Elephants, Insights and exercises to inspire authentic creativity, this class explains the components of creativity, the visual language of paint, non-traditional expression, composition, the nature of good design and the necessity of concept. Larry has taught and written extensively on different ways to think, how to explore new territory, build, refine and define your unique voice. Emphasis is on building trust in your decision process, thoughtful exploration, freedom of expression toward a deeper level of painting, and visual communication in paint. All mediums/levels are welcome, though some experience in painting is helpful. It’s good to have some understanding of the mechanics of paint and to know how to mix color.
The first part of the class will focus on idea generation on a small scale. The instructor will work in gouache, an easy to use and amazingly versatile water medium, the attendees will have to option to work in their medium of choice (gouache, acrylic, oil, mixed-media). The instructor makes the class thoughtful and fun because if you are not enjoying the class and learning useful things, what’s the point?
Larry brings his 50 year career experience and knowledge as a fine artist, an illustrator, and graphic designer to the table.

You are an outstanding teacher for many reasons. You presented the information clearly. Your painting demonstrated the principles and elements you were describing. Your personal attention to each student included inquiry about what the student was trying to achieve or if he had accomplished the task at hand. Recommendations and assignments were presented a “bit” at a time, so each person was able to attain small successes.

The smartest and most helpful book on everything it means to be creative. I sped through the first half of the book – which explains all the issues and component parts of creativity and the creative process. And now I’m working day by day through creative exercises, everyone of which brings insights and learning and wisdom to the fore and helps to make real sense of all the pockets of advice I’ve received before. This really is the master work for a full understanding of how to progress with whatever form of creativity you are in and get out of your own way in doing so. I can’t thank Larry enough for this superb work – it’s already helping me immensely in moving forward with the right intentions and with a way better understanding of the extent of what’s involved in the whole creative process.
