Sumie on Claybord and Monotype with Pastel
The approaches to drawing presented in this class can offer you new and exciting ways to compose, tell stories, and create marks on a surface. Dawn will introduce non-traditional tools and materials for subtractive and additive techniques that will enhance your imagination and offer open ended possibilities for visual expression. Students will explore the power of black and white imagery using using sumie ink on a claybord surface, then learn various methods of creating dark and light field monotypes using printing ink and water mixable oil. Mixed media approaches will be shown for adding color, including oil pastel and PanPastel.

About Dawn Emerson
Dawn is an award winning pastelist /mixed media artist, international instructor, author of Pastel Innovations, and producer of seven instructional videos. She brings an attitude of playfulness and experimentation to the stage as she merges drawing, painting and printmaking processes to inspire story telling, freedom, and creativity. In her own work she strives for the “Haiku” version of image making– where less is more, and the individual’s marks and empty spaces tell the story.
