Learn more confident and decisive brush/knife work while loosening up for fresher, livelier works in this alla prima approach to completing field sketches. Focus on finding shapes, values, and focal points, and mixing color.

Sonoran Desert in the Spring

Barbara will give you the strategies for more confident, expressive paintings alla prima.

Workshop Description

Students often struggle to mix colors to make the right values and temperatures they want. Day 1 will address value and temperature by learning how to mix colors with a fairly limited pallete. Day 2 builds on Day 1 with a full day of painting a subject outdoors en plein air. Day 3 continues concepts learned by completing Day 2’s project in studio or starting a new day with a still life subject in controlled light.
You can also get some delicious texture with a pallet knife. However, whether you choose a blade or a brush alla prima painting takes your bland, under utilized paint to a new level. This class is all about painting more confidently. One you get the right colors and apply it with confidence, you will approach painting with fresh vitality!
